Resume Keywords: How to Find and Use Them the Right Way

February 2, 2026

"Keywords" on a resume usually means the specific skills, tools, certifications, and terminology a job description uses — the things a recruiter would search for in the ATS database.

How to find the right keywords

Read the actual job description you're applying to. Required skills and qualifications sections are the highest-signal source. Note the exact terms used — if they say "stakeholder management" and you'd normally say "client handling," consider using their term if it accurately describes your experience.

Where keywords belong

Your Skills section, but also woven naturally into your Experience bullet points and Summary — a keyword that only appears in a list, disconnected from any evidence, is weaker than one demonstrated in context ("Led stakeholder management across three cross-functional teams").

Why keyword stuffing backfires

Cramming in every keyword you can find — including ones that don't reflect your real experience — reads poorly to a human reviewer and can set you up for an interview question you can't honestly answer. It also doesn't reliably help with modern ATS ranking, which increasingly weighs context and relevance, not raw keyword density.

ResumeForge's ATS Checker extracts keywords from a job description you paste and shows your match rate — including which ones are genuinely missing, so you can decide, honestly, whether to add them.
